Automated Feeders

Phenome Technologies' automated feeders are engineered for simplicity and reliability in long-term circadian and metabolic studies. Our automated feeders allow the user to both control and monitor feeding events. Available in single or dual configurations, each feeder unit drops 300 mg Bio-Serv pellets precisely into a chute that presents each pellet directly to the subject. Every feeding event is captured and logged automatically by PhenomeLab software, providing a complete, time-stamped record of feeding behavior with minimal room disturbance.

Automated Feeders

Key Features

Designed around the practical requirements of circadian feeding research — minimal wiring, easy cage swaps, and automated event logging without modifying standard caging.

Precision Pellet Delivery

A rotating food hopper drops individual pellets into a metal chute that holds each pellet directly in front of the subject through the wire cage lid, ensuring reliable access and accurate consumption detection.

Single or Dual Cage Configuration

Feeder units are available in single-cage or dual-cage configurations to suit your cabinet layout and throughput requirements. Cages slide easily in and out of the cradle for straightforward swap and cleaning procedures.

PhenomeLab Integration

Each pellet taken by the subject is recorded as a timestamped event in PhenomeLab software, producing a continuous graphical record of individual feeding activity across the full light/dark cycle.

RS485 Network Interface

All feeders communicate via a robust two-wire RS485 interface shared with the cabinet control system, minimizing room wiring and forming a reliable, low-interference subnet for each cabinet.

PIR Activity Monitoring

An optional PIR sensor mounted to the underside of the feeding plate monitors subject activity above the wire cage lid, providing motion-based activity data for subjects not using a running wheel.

Adaptable to Existing Caging

Feeders are built around standard caging with no cage modifications required. Custom configurations are available for filter-top caging such as the GMX500, with pellets dropped directly into the rear food bin through a modified lid.

Applications

Supported Research Applications

Phenome Technologies' automated feeders support research programs that demand precise, automated control of feeding schedules with complete timestamped event records.

Circadian Feeding Research

Timed pellet delivery enables precise restricted or time-controlled feeding protocols, providing a complete per-subject record of feeding onset, frequency, and meal patterning across the full circadian cycle.

Metabolic & Obesity Studies

Automated feeding combined with activity monitoring via PIR sensors or running wheels provides a comprehensive, longitudinal metabolic phenotype with minimal investigator contact and no disruption to the light/dark schedule.

Behavioral Pharmacology

The feeder system can be mounted in video cabinets with IR illumination for operant-style feeding paradigms, supporting drug efficacy and appetite research with automated data capture and PhenomeLab software integration.
